Instead of treating the symptom, it’s time to focus on the root cause of a high percentage of fire related deaths, that being stupidity and carelessness. There must be a bumper crop of morons out there who don’t have a clue about the basics of personal safety. You don’t need a college degree to know you don’t overload extension cords, or rely on a space heater as a main source of heat, or disable a smoke alarm because it goes off when you fry food, or not have a smoke alarm in the first place, or expect someone else to maintain your alarm battery. Safety officials need to focus on the front end of the problem……not the back end. People need to take responsibility for their own survival.
