I know in this situation it was bad weather and speed of the vehicle that likely caused the accident…but where I’m from, hardly anyone pulls over for amublances and fire trucks anymore. There are cars that will make no effort whatsoever to get out of their way making a clear path for them. That really bothers me. What if that were your home on fire or your family member in the ambulance? I wish more people would understand you should pull over and come to a stop, even if they aren’t on your side of the street. Ambulances and Fire trucks are here for our safety!

They don’t pull over for funeral processions any more either. That really ticks me off too.

What drives me crazy is drivers who do try to do the right thing and just stop in the middle of the road. Pull over to the side, or you create an even worse obstacle! Something in need of public education!

Since there’s a zero chance we’ll ever be able to correct dumb driving habits, maybe we should just require ambulances to drive the prevailing speed limit. If the “customer” in the back is in such dire straits that a few minutes makes the difference in life and death, why jeapardize the life of a healthy person in another vehicle trying save the victim at all costs?

I agree with the funerals. People do not turn on their lights anymore, either. It’s sad. No home-training, I guess.

I totally agree with Nebraskan. The drivers out here aren’t any better either.
I don’t know how many times I have seen people continue about their business in their cars without regards for the fire trucks, ambulances, police, etc…Saints Fan, you are right…no home training has got to be the reason. This was the very first thing I was taught when I was learning how to drive and what I have taught my daughters. Always, always, always pull over and stop for a siren.
If you cannot pull over, you are supposed to stay where you are and not move – they will go around you. I just don’t get it.

Innocent lives shouldn’t be put at risk trying to rush somebody to a hospital. In this case it was an 80 year old woman who I’ll bet wasn’t taking her maiden voyage in the back of a meat wagon. If she was in that bad shape, a few minutes either way wouldn’t have made much difference. Solution: mandate that ambulances adhere to the speed limit unless escorted by a police vehicle.

Can we say, common courtesy. If it is not taught at home, how can anyone be expected to display it on the road. Now a days it all about me me me, until it’s their family member in the back of the ambulance.

The unfortunate reality is that the current “instant gratification” mentality of parents and their offspring will only worsen. The days of respect (in general) and personal responsibility are long gone. The younger generation can’t see it because they’re part of it. There was a time (and not so long ago) that:
    1. driving a car was a full-time responsibility and no distractions were permitted. Now people play with cell phones, navigation systems, put on make-up and other activities to amuse themselves.
    2. Used to be you drove carefully to prevent accidents. Now with all the safety features it isn’t such a big priority. 360 degree airbags will protect you no matter what.
3.. getting out of the way of an emergency vehicle was a priority because you actually empathized with the situation. Not anymore. People resent having to yield to an ambulance.

Somebody suggested have a police car escort every emergency vehicle. Not sure if that’s practical, but it’s a good idea. Anyone endagering an emergency vehcicle could be arrested immediately.

Bottom line…….people are their own worst enemy.
