Seems most politicians can’t find their butts with both hands and these guys can’t either. Very sad & unfortunate circumstances. Maybe common sense should have prevailed, but then again…..

It is a tragedy that two men lost their lives fighting this fire and I by no means wish to diminish that loss. The FDNY protects all citizens and property and their bravery cannot be under-stated.

What concerns me about this is the rationale (or lack thereof) for decision to put these men in a dangerous situation in the first place. The building has been vacant since 9/11/01. It was being demolished floor-by-floor and there was no danger of it collapsing. It would seem that the primary objective would be to protect any threatened adjacent properties. What would be the need for any firefighter to venture into a structure with no value and become trapped? Hoisting hoses via ropes is one thing, buy why the firefighters couldn’t have stayed on the building perimeter confounds me.

There was another recent episode in a southern state where 9 firefighters died battling a blaze in a sofa warehouse. A wall collapsed and trapped them underneath. No one was in the building and there was no adjacent property at risk. Why not let it burn out when it’s apparent it can’t be saved?

Maybe it’s time to re-evaluate strategies for firefighting. When there is nothing to be gained, discretion should used in tactics.

My thoughts exactly. It always breaks my heart and confounds me when I read of lives lost protecting nothing.

Not worth the risk, these guys and gals have better places and people to save.

they should have evacuated the area around the towers-when the towers fell, hosed off & cleaned up all the “toxic debris” with fire dept & clean up crews trained & equipped for toxic debris, drained it to the already contaminated & polluted ocean in NY, then repaired all the WTC collapsed adjacent damaged buildings and then repaired the damage, instead they have to turn the whole project into a decades long litigation, claim & pork orgy where the damage isn’t repaired but expanded & litigated to the Nth degree.

If these folks ran Pearl Harbor they’d still be suing each other in Japanese.

    On another note……
I can’t beleive Giuliani is running on his 9/11 record and he has the NERVE TO claim immigration enforcement with Bill Bratton as head of Homeland Security.

(Bratton is in LA now not enforcing immigration law here too).

    Excellent point.

I’m wondering if they didn’t want the building to burn because of the toxicity of the known & unknown construction materials. Put the fire out quick and theoretically their exposure is low.

Now they have to own up to both – the pollution and the deaths.

This building isn’t so big that pumping water from the perimeter wouldn’t get the job done. These poor souls got trapped inside the building. What a waste.

    Claims Guy,
You are right on! Too many times our public servants are injured or killed in the line of duty needlessly. This needs to stop. These folks risk their lives every time they go on a call. Their leaders need to examine the risks better than is presently done.

I think you all lost me here… the politicians set the fire, right? Oh, no wait, the politicians spread asbestos in the building, no that’s not it. The politicians dragged the firefighters kicking and screaming into the building then tied them to a… nah. I don’t see how you’re connecting this to politicians.

The brave firefighters of the FDNY responded to a fire and worked hard to do their jobs, sadly and tragically two of them died in the attempt. That’s a part of the job.

The building was in the process of being demolished following correct safety precautions when dealing with materials that will later be used as evidence in a lawsuit. Then we’ll all blame the politicians for not protecting us from what they knew was dangerous (asbestos, dust with heavy metals, etc).

You don’t let a building “burn out” in NYC regardless of how occupied or vacant it is. When something catches fire, you try to put it out. It’s not a matter of the value of the structure itself but the potential damage it could cause if the fire spread.

This was a construction (or demolition, actually) accident that caused a fire which resulted in the loss of two lives. There’s no pinning it on politicians this time.

It is a miracle and completely defies post 9/11 science that this building is still standing. Small fires in metal skeleton buildings means collapse as little fire can melt steel! And this building is almost completely demolished to start with…

Oh yeah that’s right, 9/11 is to bush as Reichstag is to Hitler.
