Ok not daining the resevoirs prior to spring rains is stupid and defeats the whole purpose of the system. It is political in that many of the NY rich have lake front properties on these resevoirs and like the asthetics of it all over the impact to downstream real estate. The comment that retaining water in a resevoir cant cause a flood even when 100% full is interesting so when the leveee system breaks down what is the vioolent escape of billions of gallons of water called. If not flood then I guess it would be covered.

Hey, if they want to get rid of some of the water they can ship it down to Florida where we are in a Phase II water restriction.

Now don\’t get your panties in a bunch. I was just kidding. We are not asking for a handout.

Were the resevoirs designed with flood control in mind or for water storage? Prety hard to get full benefit for both. If morons are worried about flooding, then build on higher ground. The city resevoir doesn\’t make the rain come down. Sounds like a classic case of whining over something you should have looked to happen a lot earlier.

It only makes sense that if you remove the water storage by letting it go down the river to the sea, you will reduce flooding. Even better would be to remove the reservoirs completely then, by their logic, there would no danger at all!

What the other comments are missing is knowledge of the situation.

The reservoirs are designed to hold and provide water to the City of New York. The residents of upstate New York, and neighboring New Jersey and Pennsylvania obtain their drinking water from other sources. These folks could live over 100 miles from NYC. The operators of the reservoirs are concerned about maintaining a water supply for millions of people, and would like a very full reservoir. The residents near the reservoirs and down stream are concerned about the flooding of their homes, and would like a less full reservoir.
