It is difficult to believe that the band, the owners of the club, and the local fire inspector were so ignorant and incompetent to allow this situation to occur. I believe my 35 years experience in insurance claims and loss control qualify me to make that observation. First off, the band should have realized that they physical plant was inappropriate for any type of pyrotechnics. Second, the owners of the place should have known the same thing, and insisted that none be used. In addition, there is no reason the exits should have been locked while the place was filled with customers. Third, the local fire marshall should have inspected the band\’s set-up to insure no pyrotechnics were being used.
This is simply another classic case of human greed and stupidity in wanting to make a buck quickly. If the band played quality music, it wouldn\’t need a diversion like pyrotechnics. The low ceilings and flammable construction were obvious to the band, the owners, and the fire marshall. This was a low class local dump that had no right to operate. If the fire marshall knew what he was doing, it would have been closed down before this tragedy occured.
