“Pennsylvania’s mines are among the safest in the nation,” Deputy Secretary for Mineral Resources Management Jay Scott Roberts said. “Most independent underground anthracite miners have a strong commitment to safety and work closely with our underground inspectors to correct unsafe conditions and operate under established safe mining practices. However, in this case, the owners and operators of this mine have been unwilling or unable to operate in compliance with state regulations, and have shown a disregard for the safety and well-being of the miners and their families.”

Sounds almost as bad as the mines in China. China has really terrible mine safety conditions. If a worker gets killed in the mine, the family gets a $20,000. settlement. Supposedly it\’s cheaper for the mine to reimburse people for their dead than to create safe mine conditions.
