Conn. Motor Vehicle Registries Expand Hours, Add Staff

As part of an effort to improve customer service at the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles, Governor M. Jodi Rell announced that, beginning November 1, DMV will open an additional day per week at three small offices.

DMV has also begun to increase staff at the state’s busiest full-service offices to assist with a variety of transactions, including special days for senior citizens.

In bolstering staff in DMV offices, Rell said she is addressing issues associated with an increased need for registry and licensing services and additional security measures to protect against fraud.

Rell included funds in her budget to increase office hours and fill 24 positions with part-time workers. The three satellite offices that will open an additional day each week are in Putnam, Winsted and Stamford. These and other smaller DMV centers offer limited hours and services.

In Putnam, the office will be open beginning November 1 on Saturdays (8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.). The Winsted office’s new day will be Friday (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and in Stamford it will be every Thursday (8 a.m.- 7 p.m.). In addition, new part-time personnel will assist in DMV’s busiest full-service branches (Norwalk, Norwich, Hamden, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Wethersfield, New Britain, Enfield and Old Saybrook.)

DMV is also planning to increase hours later this year at its smaller office in Willimantic.

Rell also asked DMV officials to provide additional services to the state’s senior citizens by providing assistance one day each month for renewal at satellite offices of non-driver identification cards. These are usually done at full-service branch offices.

The senior citizen days, which are open to people 65 years old and older, will be held monthly in Stamford (the first Wednesday), Middletown (the third Friday), Putnam (the third Wednesday) and Derby (the second Friday). During these special days, senior citizens can renew non-driver ID cards at these satellite offices and expedite other kinds of transactions with the DMV. During other days, the non-driver ID cards are processed only at full-service branch offices.
