My husband was once a member of the Teamster Union and drove a truck for a living (short haul). He now is safer in sales and stopped driving all together. I can\’t tell you the number of times he has had \”close calls\” with ignorant drivers who cut him off at the last minute just to get two car lenghts ahead of him. Don\’t people realize that these trucks need to \”downshift\” before they can slow down or stop? You merely cannot apply breaks to a bob-tail or 18 wheeler and expect them to slow down immediately. Motorcycles are the worst – seen many of those types of accidents with the big-wheelers — not pretty. I say unionize all truck drivers (for quality control), require that they study for and pass a test, both written and behind the wheel- perhaps at every license renewal?
Require drug & alcohol testing and require a COMPREHENSIVE state-mandated vehicle safety program for all employers of these veicles. If no one can control the ignorant driver who cuts off a trucker, maybe we can \”control\” the truckers and give them the information and education needed to keep themselves (and us) safe on our roads.
