The U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and DiVal Safety Equipment Inc. have formed an alliance to reduce and prevent Western New York workers’ exposure to occupational hazards in three industries.
Under the alliance, OSHA and DiVal, a provider of safety equipment and training, will work together to develop training and education programs about hazards associated with the concrete industry, tree trimming operations and public warehousing.
“This alliance allows us to reach workers in three industries, equipping them with the knowledge to spot and prevent the hazards they are likely to encounter in their jobs,” said Patricia Clark, OSHA’s regional administrator.
Training will focus on silica hazards in the concrete industry; hazards posed to tree trimmers from falls, moving traffic and work near overhead power lines; and warehousing hazards involving forklifts and ergonomics.
“These industries carry specific and significant hazards for workers,” said Art Dube, OSHA’s Buffalo area director. “By working together with employers and workers, we hope to reduce and eliminate many of these hazards for workers in western New York.”
Under the alliance, OSHA and DiVal will share information on best practices and publicize the results through outreach and training materials.
They also will encourage other employers to build relationships with OSHA and the New York State safety consultation service and promote their participation in OSHA’s cooperative programs, including Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP), consultation and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).
