Kristina Baldwin says \”enacting credit freeze provisions in New York would most likely result in increased costs, burden and inconvenience both for the consumer and for businesses operating in New York State with only minimal resulting consumer benefits.\”

TOUGH. The only increased costs are going to be to the institutions that want instant access to your personal information. I would MUCH rather live with the \”inconvenience\” of having to delay \”instant gratification\” and wait one or two extra days to buy a car, cell phone, etc, than worry about what thug is pretending to be me and opening credit in my name or going through my bank accounts.

Why are the credit bureaus/banks allowed to sell your information to the highest bidder in the first place? Who are they accountable to when THEY make a mistake (ChoicePoint,BOA,Citigroup)?

Its always seems to be the victim that spends the most time picking up the pieces their lives have been made into when their information has been compromised. This has GOT to stop. Make the credit bureaus and banks more accountable. They need to pay huge fines when they slip up.

Consumers need to contact their Senators and Congressman and DEMAND the right to control their information and protect their good names with credit freezes. If they won\’t, vote them out and elect people who will.

Credit freezes are the only way to prevent identity theft.

Your article also got a reaction from this site: http://www.GuardMyCreditFile.org. They refer to PCI\’s argument as the \”chicken little\” approach.

Good argument PCI. And in closing I noticed you revealed your real concern with credit freeze. The impact it might have on your world. TOUGH. You guys make enough money selling off consumer info. Putting a freeze on things would severly cut into your pockets. It is by many experts the only solution to the problem. Credit alerts are often not honored and are bypassed. The only solution is a freeze.

PCI\’s opinion on credit freeze is self-serving and uninformed. Credit freeze is the only option identity theft victims have to protect themselves. The so-called fraud alert offered by the credit bureaus is a waste. If a fraud alert actually did any protecting, why do they sell credit monitoring services? I don\’t want anyone viewing my credit report that I haven\’t authorized and that should be my right as a consumer. There is nothing out there in the world, including insurance, that I will ever need bad enough to not be able to wait for my report to thaw.

I agree 100%. The banks & others that send out thousands of credit card applications that can easily fall into the wrong hands, & others that gladly give credit to the identity theives without adequate research into their identities are to blame, not the consumers.

I would rather have to jump through a flaming hoop to acquire credit when I need it as opposed to it being handed to anyone who claims to be me.

Why are there objections to having the choice of a \”credit freeze?\” It is a matter of choice. No one has to freeze their credit file unless they want to. Do we have any rights left to choose anything? Nothing is ever done in the best interests of the American people. Everything is done in the best interests of giant corporations.

Guys, read between the lines here. Of COURSE a credit freeze will help reduce ID theft. The article is not very well headlined, because what PCI is really saying is PUT IN AN EXEMPTION for insurance companies.

And, that really does make sense. Yes, it is a lot more hassle for ins. companies to deal with frozen credit. And YES, it is pretty unlikely that someone is going to use YOUR identity to purchase insurance in YOUR name.

So, it\’s reasonable for insurers to be able to still put credit info. That\’s what they\’re really saying.
