Enhancing workplace safety and health for workers in the heavy and highway construction industries in New York is the goal of a newly-signed alliance between the Albany, Buffalo and Syracuse offices of the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Associated General Contractors, New York State Chapter Inc. (NYS AGC)
Under the alliance, OSHA and the NYS AGC will provide information, guidance and access to training resources that will help protect employees’ health and safety. This will be accomplished through the development of training and education programs addressing the hazards facing workers on heavy and highway construction work. The training programs will focus on reducing workers’ exposures to falls, being struck by objects and equipment, silica dust and other hazards.
“This alliance will be an invaluable tool in reducing on-the-job hazards,” said Patricia Clark, OSHA’s regional administrator in New York. “We want to help educate contractors and their workers to recognize and avoid hazards on the job.”
The alliance was signed by Clark; John Tomich, OSHA’s Albany area director; Chris Adams, OSHA’s Syracuse area director; Art Dube, OSHA’s Buffalo area director; and William Mascetta, chairman, NYS AGC.
