Having lived in VA, and while I fundimentally don’t like the idea of the ‘spy in the sky’, I understand why there is the need.

Living now in Jacksonville, FL, I’ve seen that the problem is even worse here. A yellow light means speed up and a red light means really speed up. You can always count on two, three and sometimes more cars going through on the red. I believe that these cameras do save lives, and there is no price you can put on that. If these municipalities are coming close to breaking even, then I say it’s a bargain. keep the cameras!

Anyone who believes any type of traffic control such as cameras is designed for a safety factor also believes in Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy. It is strictly for increased revenues. To me the question of camera watched intersections is not the amount of revenue derived, but the number of accidents they have prevented. Interesting reduction in accidents was not mentioned, only that the cities are not increasing revenue they predicted. Once the populas realizes they are at a certain location, the people will be more cautious or avoid the intersection which reduces the revenue derived from the camera installation. Again tax payers have been dooped.
