Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell announced Commonwealth agencies continue to support local officials and emergency responders in response to the ice storm that ripped through the northeastern part of the Commonwealth over the weekend.
The PA Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) is coordinating the response with the PA Public Utility Commission, PA Department of Transportation, county and local emergency managers and officials to restore electricity and assist residents in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
“The varying weather conditions from heavy rain in the western and central portions of the state, to snow and ice in the northern and eastern areas, over the course of the last few days caused problems for many people across the Commonwealth,” the Governor said.
According to PEMA Director David Sanko, the latest bout of weather precipitated minor flooding in western Pennsylvania and brought ice storms to residents in eastern Pennsylvania. Another storm could be on its way in Northeastern Pennsylvania with several inches of snow and additional ice accumulation.
“We are asking everyone to please be patient while restoration is complete,” said Sanko. “Residents may contact their local emergency management agency for information on shelters open in Carbon, Monroe and Lackawanna counties.”
“I would like to thank everyone involved with the recovery including first responders and emergency management personnel on the state, county and local levels for working quickly to help those affected recover from these ice storms,” the Governor added.
