Connecticut Governor John Rowland joined cancer survivors and advocates this week to ceremonially sign into law Public Act 04-34 which requires insurance companies to provide some financial assistance towards the cost of wigs.
The bill, An Act Concerning Health Insurance Coverage for Wigs for Chemotherapy Patients, mandates insurance carriers to cover up to $350 for a wig that is prescribed by a licensed oncologist for a patient who suffers hair loss as a result of chemotherapy.
Connecticut state law already mandates several types of specific insurance coverage for cancer patients including benefits for reconstructive surgery, surgical removal of tumors, outpatient chemotherapy, and prostheses.
“We cannot do enough as a society to help alleviate the pain and suffering of cancer patients,” said Rowland. “This is a small but important benefit that will help thousands of cancer survivors across the state maintain their dignity and mobility.”
The Governor ceremonially signed the bill at the American Cancer Society’s state headquarters in Meriden. He officially signed the legislation into law on April 28, 2004.
