Del. Citizens to Have Free Access to InsureNet Verification System

The Insurance Commissioner of Delaware, Donna Lee Williams has reportedly ensured that the new InsureNet Insurance Verification System will provide free access to anyone wishing to use it.

Soon, motorists will be able to check their insurance status and that of any vehicle involved in an accident with a simple “800” phone call. The InsureNet system will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and will provide callers instantly with the current real-time status of any policy.

The InsureNet system is based on unique codes assigned to each policy that give no access to personal data or history. This means that privacy is not an issue with this system because no personal details of an insured are ever maintained. Because the system has no records on motorists or policyholders, it reportedly can never be used to “target” individuals or groups.

Currently it is estimated that as many as one in five of all vehicles are uninsured at any given time. On many occasions, when an accident occurs, drivers and the police may remain unaware of the real insurance status of vehicles and it may be weeks or even months before it’s discovered a vehicle was not insured.

The InsureNet System allows law enforcement to determine the current insurance status on any vehicle any time a registration is checked or an ID card is read. The system also means that no vehicle can be registered or inspected without instant, verifiable coverage, and Courts know status instantly for both the court date and date of citation.
