Medical certification of truck drivers is an important safety issue. Last week, I wrote a blog article discussing the criminal investigation against this Georgia medical certifier. We need to discuss the certification process. Should the role of medical examiner be limited to medical physicians? Should medical examiner records be reviewed when the number of certifications (such as the Georgia case) are impossibly large? Should examination records be reviewed following accidents where fatigue or health issues may be a potential cause? What role should trucking companies have in the process?
