Scammers Use Florida Regulator’s Name in Bogus Cancellation Email

September 9, 2016

The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) and the Department of Financial Services (DFS) are warning state insurance consumers of a scam involving the unauthorized use of Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier’s name and position.

According to a statement from OIR and DFS, a fraudulent email, appearing to be sent from Altmaier, has been sent to consumers, notifying that all of the recipient’s insurance policies have be cancelled.

“OIR does not send notices of cancellation and those who receive this email should disregard the information. Consumers should not click on any links contained with the email message, and should immediately delete the email,” the statement said.

Consumers should report this scam and all fraudulent activity to the Department of Financial Services’ Insurance Consumer Helpline by calling 1 (877) 693–5236. Consumers can also utilize this helpline to speak directly with insurance experts who can assist consumers with the filing of post-storm claims and answer any insurance-related questions.
