Residents Win Lawsuit Against West Virginia City

A jury has ordered the city of Huntington, W.Va., pay more than $1 million to 18 families whose homes were hit by flooding.

The Wayne County jury made its verdict this week, ruling that the city was negligent when it failed to maintain a water control system along Krouts Creek. That caused water to back up and flood the Spring Valley area in May 2011.

Huntington Mayor Steve Williams told The Herald-Dispatch that the city will examine its responsibilities to the project.

It marked the second verdict in three years against the city of Huntington in a storm control system dispute. In 2010, a jury verdict awarded 22 families nearly $775,000.
