Flooded Austin Homes to be Demolished

April 4, 2014

Demolition has begun on some Central Texas homes left unlivable after flooding during deadly fall storms.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Tuesday that crews are concentrating on Onion Creek neighborhoods.

Late October and early November flooding caused more than an estimated $100 million in damage to Travis County and damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes. At least six people died in the Central Texas floods.

People who live near the decimated homes have raised health and safety concerns.

The first residences being torn down include 14 homes purchased by Austin before the Halloween storms and severely damaged during the disaster along the flood plain.

The Army Corps of Engineers last month approved nearly $12 million for an additional 44 Onion Creek buyouts – pushing the total to about 160 residences.
