How well does the underground water levels really correlate with flooding risk? Louisiana has experienced some pretty significant flooding in the recent past – and it has a “no elevated risk” color. Likewise, some pretty expensive real estate is downstream of the Oroville dam in California. Due to an extended recent drought, northern California is actually rated extremely low for flooding, but if there is a failure of the dam, there will be some very large losses. I haven’t seen the data behind the maps, but it seems to me that flooding risk does not correlate with the colors drawn on this map.
