We’ve taken something that people do in most cases from the age of 16 onward and changed it to something so complicated – people don’t even want to be involved. How many MILLIONS of dollars have these “improvements” added to the cost of the average vehicle overall over all vehicles produced? To what end? So big car company’s won’t get sued as often? Pare it down to basics – People want to get in a car, turn a key and drive -they don’t want the car thinking for them. Also if the car starts doing something on it’s own because of some sensor and it’s not doing what you want it do it creates panic in the driver – which, guess what, can cause an accident. Further, after you’ve worked all day do you want to watch a DVD and read a 500+page owners manual for your car to learn what it does? Get a grip….high tech is great until you get to so high tech people say “How Ridiculous is this”? I think we’ve arrived. For instance – last winter I was in a rental car that was telling me there may be ice on the road – do I really need the car to let me know that – It’s December in the Northeast – there’s snow and OH MY Ice around – really?…it was a huge distraction. the dash lights were flashing, occasionally the dash would beep and I’m trying to drive in snow AND figure out what the heck the car is trying to tell me. Just sayin, some things look better on paper than how they actually function in real life.

I have nothing but praise for Subaru’s new Eyesight system which recently prevented an accident on a busy NY highway when someone cut off the car in front of my wife. Even though my wife saw a problem coming and was prepared to apply the brakes the Eyesight system reacted faster, bringing the car to a safe stop. Yes, the owners manual is long but we purposely bought the car for these features so they’re worth the extra effort and as you can see they work.
