Kafka’s first-hand experience: Franz Kafka, in 1907, first worked for the Assicurazioni Generali, a large Italian
insurance company. After about a year, he resigned and went to work for the Workers’
Accident Insurance Institute for the Kingdom of Bohemia, where he worked for the
remainder of his life as a workers’ compensation claims clerk. This was considered his “day
job”-with his writing being done on his own time. This job gave Kafka “first-hand knowledge
of industrial injury and the sufferings of workers in factories …. ” He told a friend: “How
modest these men are. They come to us and beg. Instead of storming the Institute and
smashing it to bits, they come and beg”. KAFKA, Nicholas Murray, Yale University Press,
2004 pp. 65, 70. [Emphasis supplied].
