Until safe auto designs were mandated by the federal government and the courts, auto companies blamed motorists for their crashes and injuries – “They didn’t pay attention,” was the argument.

That’s what major league baseball seems to be doing – blaming fans for injuries caused by errant balls. Here’s a telling quote from this article:

“‘Stray balls are part of the very fabric of the game,’ MLB said in a legal brief filed in January supporting the Braves, who are defendants in a pending lawsuit by the family of the six-year-old girl hurt at a 2010 game. Fans ‘understand there is a risk of being struck by an errant ball.'”

Yes, they’re “part of the very fabric of the game” and therefore entirely predictable, just as it’s predictable that children, who may be avid baseball enthusiasts, will be among those hit and injured by stray balls traveling at the speed of cars on the highway. It’s essential that adequate protection be provided between stray balls and vulnerable fans so that the “fabric of the game” is not needlessly stained with the blood of its fans.

Exactly. That’s why I agree with you wholeheartedly!
