The use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in disaster documentation and recovery has been tested and ongoing for some time now. Several organizations such as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and MatterNet have already conducted field trials and have sUAS in full operation.

Insurers such as USAA, State Farm and American Family have already invested in UAS technology for claims handling and USAA has gone so far as to apply for an FAA 333 Exemption as early as October 2014 to allow their use as soon as possible.

We at Transport Risk Management currently insure more than 2,000 UAS for all uses including insurance claims handling.

It’s not a matter of if or speculation of their use and who will be flying them, it’s already being done. And they are already being insured by Tranpsort Risk Management and the aviation and aerospace insurance industry.
