Wow, great recap on the history of structured settlements. The story about Congressman Langevin was new to me. One thing I’ve been wondering about recently is if the JG Wentworth IPO will bring so much negative attention to the factoring industry that legislators will start increasing regulation to prevent abuses. It will definitely be interesting to see how this all plays out and what the tax implications will be.
Working with structured settlement recipients, I enjoyed reading Denise’s article on its origin. Congressman Langevin story was also powerful and serves as a reminder that these structured settlement payments are often tied to a difficult story.
It’s amazing how much the industry has grown over the years. The only downside blip was in 2008 when there were financing issues which led to a VC investment into JG wentworth & Einstein Structured Settlements for the industry to sustain through the credit crisis.
