Isn’t it amazing that 88% of these fatal accidents were caused by the first four items. All of which, by the way are related to the fact that all the creature comforts in newer cars are designed to make us relax and “enjoy the ride”. A smoother, quieter, more comfortable ride seems to be just the thing to lure us into a sense of complacency about the monster we’re supposed to “stay in control of”.

Cars have become cuddly little kittens that do everything for us and couldn’t possibly hurt us, so why do they need our constant attention?

Today people learn to drive and that’s it (gas and go!). Most people I talk to don’t even understand why they have 1st and 2nd gear on an automatic transmission. Oversteer and understeer – what are those? We don’t have to HANDLE a car anymore, so why pay attention to it when there are more important things to do while we’re driving.

If we’ve taken the uncomfortable tiger out of the vehicles themselves, maybe it’s time to put at least a bit of it back – either in the vehicle OR better yet- the driver’s test.
