Unilever said that it is, in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration, voluntarily recalling 1,000 jars of a variety of Ragu pasta sauce from North Carolina and 14 other states because the formula contains undeclared milk.

People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk could risk serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume Ragu Pasta Sauce, Old World Style, Marinara, the company said in a statement. The company hasn't received any reports of adverse reactions to the formula, which also contains ground beef.

The recall relates only to 1,000 1-pound, 10-ounce glass jars, the company said. They are marked with UPC No. 3620000400 on a front label and Best If Used By dates of SEP20 2008 on the bottle cap.

The sauce was distributed to customers in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. The product was also distributed in Poplar Bluff, Miss.; White Plains, N.Y.; Marietta, Ohio; Uniontown and Washington, Pa.

Unilever said the recall was initiated after it received a complaint from a retail store about the incorrect label and it was discovered that the packaging did not reveal the presence of milk on the ingredient list.

Customers who bought the recalled sauce are urged to discard it immediately and contact the company for a refund.
