Under Insured Motorist Claim to Cover Most of $260K Crash Settlement

June 26, 2014

The family of a Vermont woman killed in a hit-and-run crash last year has reached a settlement with the driver.

Merrill Outslay of Mendon, Vt.,the husband of 71-year-old Jane Outslay, sued Christopher Sullivan in Rutland civil court earlier this year.

The 53-year-old Sullivan, former city attorney for Rutland, pleaded not guilty to leaving the scene of a fatal crash and driving under the influence with death resulting.

The Rutland Herald reports both sides agreed to a $260,000 settlement that would end the wrongful death lawsuit in the April 2013 accident.

Matthew Anderson, the family’s lawyer, said Sullivan would pay $10,000 with $25,000 coming from Sullivan’s insurance company. That represents the maximum amount of his liability coverage.

The remaining $225,000 comes from the Outslays’ insurance as an under insured motorist claim.
