Ocean City, Maryland has agreed to settle age discrimination claims brought by two police officers.
Sgt. Dale Marshall and former officer Sgt. Kathleen Braeuninger claimed they were denied advanced training and promotion because they were nearing retirement age. The claims were represented by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Ocean City has agreed to pay $40,000 in back wages to the officers. Braeuninger has since retired.
The settlement also requires the mayor, Town Council, town manager and members of the police department to get training in age discrimination.
Ocean City attorney Guy Ayres says the town accepted the settlement because it would have more expensive to take the case to trial.
